Ask aGuyonClematis – Biking in West Palm Beach

I regularly get questions about West Palm Beach, so I’m starting a new feature where I will post the answers on line for all to see.

Kathrine asks:

I would love to see cycling promoted. Weather it’s something like that. More bike lanes, or like the rent a bike stations like in Minneapolis MN where you can rent a bike from a bike rack and turn it into any other bike rack.

Who would I talk to about this?

The good news is that West Palm Beach is getting it’s own bike share program. This is going to be a big network of bike-racks spread throughout downtown, and bikes that you can rent at a very reasonable rate ($99/year).

This project was spearheaded by biking enthusiasts like DowntownWPB‘s Executive Director, Raphael Clemente, who is always interested in talking about additional ways to make the city more bikeable / walkable.

West Palm Beach also recently commissioned “walkability scholar” and urban designer, Jeff Speck, to do a study on walkability in Downtown West Palm Beach. Everyone in the biking / walking community hopes that this study will help guide the City of West Palm Beach to implementing some new ways to make our downtown more walkable / bikeable.

There are also a couple blogs that focus on walking & biking in West Palm Beach – these include discussions on tactical urbanism, restriping roads to add bike lanes, etc.

If you want to meet with other biking enthusiasts here are a couple groups that are very active.
