Two days with a Moke in West Palm Beach

If you follow me online you have no doubt seen my posts about my adventures on the Moke. The question that everyone (including one of WPB’s Finest who stopped me to ask about it) wants answered:

What is a Moke?

What began as a military invention for the British army in the late 1950s became a cultural touch point with celebrity fans like Brigitte Bardot, Princess Margaret, Emperor Rosko and the Beach Boys. Created by the British Motor Company and Alec Issigonis, the father of the original Austin Mini, the Moke was designed to be combat ready, a car that could be parachuted from the skies. While its life as a military vehicle didn’t last too long, the open-air car became beloved by stars, surfers and Caribbean travelers. Moke became synonymous with easy breezy island chic. See more history here.

My Moke was the electric version. It had a top speed of 25 mph with a range of 40 miles on a full charge. More than enough to tear up West Palm Beach.

You can get a Moke for your own at Palm Beach Garage. I borrowed one for the weekend, and this is what I did:

I’m up at 5am every day. With Sunrise hitting at just after 6am I have more than enough time to cruise up to Palm Beach and watch the sunrise from the iconic Clock Tower at Worth Avenue.

On the way back, we swung by Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump’s “Winter White House”. Since it was still early, and there was no secret service to be seen, we stopped for a quick picture.

Each year from October to April, on Saturday mornings the waterfront is taken over the West Palm Beach Green Market. Get breakfast, your veggies, mushrooms, pickles, dog treats, crab cakes, acai bowls, freshly pressed sugarcane juice, whatever you want you got it. It’s the kind of place that you’d expect to find Martha Stewart shopping, who as a matter of fact stops in every season.

This week was special as it was the last week that “Flagler Shore” was going to be open, so it made sense to take the Moke down for a spin. I utilized my special privilege as aGuyonClematis and grabbed a free parking spot on Flagler Shore.

That evening we took the Moke down to the Flagler Drive in the South End and got some epic drone footage of us driving around Flagler. Along the way we bumped into friends and gave free rides on the Moke.

Sunday we cruised on down to the brand new Grandview Public Market, the amazing new spot in the Warehouse District. It was easy parking for the Moke as we headed in to get some of that amazing Rabbit Cold Brew Coffee which we nursed for the next couple hours as we continued our tour of West Palm Beach.

Instead of cruising back on the waterfront, we drove through the small streets of our Grandview and Flamingo Park neighborhoods.

A few weeks ago I noticed that the Palm Beach Modern Auctions building on Bunker Rd. was getting a mural done, so I stopped by to see how things were progressing.

The work is amazing. They are preparing for a big March 3rd auction.

Last stop on our tour was the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival. The Moke was perfect to swing down and get through all the traffic and find a parking spot that wasn’t too far from the action.

Like always the art was fantastic, and we spent a few hours wandering through the streets of Lake Worth before heading home.

Weekend is now over and it’s time to give back the Moke. We had a great time zipping around town, and the Moke was a perfect way to see things.

Jackson approves of this Moke.
