Google celebrates Nelson Mandela Day

If you were watching the news yesterday, you would have seen what I was described on twitter as “world going up in flames.”

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the 298 people who lost their lives in the MH17 flight, as well as everyone who is affected by the violence on the ground in Ukraine, as well as middle east.

This morning, Google used their “doodle” to honor the birthday of Nelson Mandela. To celebrate someone who experienced the violence of hate first hand, and turned away from violence choosing to make a difference through peace.

No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.

What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.

Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.

For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedoms of others.

The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall.
